Definition: Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is a psychological treatment that targets the harmful thoughts (such as obsessions) and behaviors (such as compulsions) that accompany OCD. CBT can be provided by a number of health professionals including psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses and social workers. CBT is often time limited and entails "homework" where you might be assigned to keep track of thoughts and behaviors related to the OCD symptoms. Although not everyone responds to CBT, it remains one of the most effective treatments available to reduce the frequency and severity of OCD symptoms. CBT can be used alone or in combination with medication. As well, CBT can be done in either individual or group format.
