Boosting Treatments for OCD

By , About.com GuideDecember 1, 2008

Follow me on:

It has been estimated that between 40% and 60% people with OCD do not benefit from first-line drugs such as Anafranil (Clomipramine). A recent study published in the journal CNS spectrums found that by combining Celexa (Citalopram) and Anafranil, 50% of people who had not responded to Anafranil alone showed an improvement in their symptoms. Multi-drug therapy has been widely used in other areas in medicine for years; however, it is only recently that this augmentation strategy has caught on in treating mental illness. Combing different medications allows physicians to target neurochemical systems in very specific ways to get the best possible results.
